The issue
Housing diversity is future infrastructure.
Australians are living alone, ageing in place, forming smaller households and moving through different arrangements across their lives. A narrow range of dwelling types cannot serve this diversity well.
How this affects Australians and Queenslanders
For Australians, greater housing choice can improve workforce mobility, ageing outcomes and access to education and essential services.
For Queenslanders, well-located and accessible homes can allow younger people, essential workers and older residents to remain connected to their communities.
The second-order effect of limited choice is spatial mismatch: larger homes are underused while people who need smaller or adaptable homes are pushed farther from opportunity.
A preferred future would let people change homes without losing their networks, identity or access to services.
This shifts the central question from:
How many dwellings can be delivered?
to:
Which missing housing option would allow more people to remain connected to the places they value?
